Medical Coding is the transformation of a patient's healthcare diagnosis, treatment received, prescriptions, equipment used in a healthcare process by a healthcare professional or a doctor into alphanumeric codes. These codes are used for billing purposes, to claim insurance for payment purposes.
For coding purposes, medical coders use a set of specific codes for coding purposes. They use certain assigned codes mainly, ICD, CPT and HCPCS.
ICD codes or International Classification of Codes are set of published diagnostic codes set by World Health Organisation (WHO). They contain signs and symptoms or any other abnormal findings on a patient. For instance, L98.1 denotes Facial Dermatitis.
